Day 57 – A Picture A Day While My Soldier’s Away

Today was the 3rd Brigade’s Summer Bash. It was a special kind of HOT too. There were games, food, bounce houses, water fun, and of course RAKKASANS!!! There was a Torii nearly everywhere I looked. I just love the pride of 3rd Brigade. This is me with two of my favorite Rakkettes – Steffanie & Jessica.

Day 51 – A Picture A Day While My Soldier’s Away

I took Kylie to the splash park on post this afternoon. The whole way there she was excited to go, running through the parking lot all the way to our picnic table. At that point though, she just hung out near the bench. I tried more than once to convince her to go play in the water with the other kids, but she was content just watching. I stopped pushing the issue and looked around at what she was watching instead. Among the dozens of kids running through the water was a Daddy. He was chasing his little girl, picking her up, tickling her, and laughing with her. I felt my heart in my throat and the tears welling up in my eyes. I wasn’t sure if Kylie felt the same, and I wasn’t about to ask in case she didn’t notice. Looking at this picture though, I realize that she was probably missing you just as much as I was. We left shortly after, and she never played in the water. I guess she’s waiting for you…

Day 48 – A Picture A Day While My Soldier’s Away

It was another Africa hot kinda day. The kind of day where you just want to hang out in the air conditioned house because the mere thought of going outside has you breaking out in a sweat. The kind of heat that takes your breath away and makes you feel a little light headed from standing in it too long. We are under a heat advisory for the next few days – we have all been complaining nonstop about the heat. I can’t help but think about all of you in Afghanistan though. The temperatures are comparable, if not hotter, and yet we don’t hear you guys complaining. I think about all of the layers of clothes and gear you have to wear, the jobs you have to get done, and the general lack of comfort you all endure. Suddenly, I feel terrible for complaining and overwhelmingly grateful for all of you in Afghanistan. Thank you.

Day 42 – A Picture A Day While My Soldier’s Away

We couldn’t take a trip to Florida without hitting up the beach. We brought my sister Sarah & my niece Chloe along too. The girls made sandcastles, laid in the sun, and sat near the shore laughing at the waves. I took a bazillion pictures as always, but this one was one of my favorites. I can almost hear them laughing still. More than anything, it reminds me of life. The waves will always keep coming. Sometimes we can jump over them, dive into them, or float on by. Other times, they may topple us over completely – feet in the air and all. The important thing is that we bounce back… and laugh :)

Day 37 – A Picture A Day While My Soldier’s Away

This morning we all piled in Tina’s old “Creek Truck” and took the wild ride to Jenn’s water front property for some sun. The Tennessee flooding this past spring washed away some of the “path”, so it was even more wild than what you would remember from last summer. Once we got there, all of the kids took off into the water, and Tina, Jenn, & I propped our chairs mid-stream. Kylie didn’t hate it, but she didn’t love it either. I have to admit that the water was Antartica cold. We got some sun and had fun though, which was the intention all along. Next summer we’ll head to the creek, only with you this time. I can’t wait to see you swing from the rope in the tree and jump in the water again!!

Day 6 – A Picture A Day While My Soldier’s Away

Today we took a trip to the water park in Hopkinsville. It was Steffanie’s birthday, so we celebrated with her and her kiddos. Marissa and Kylie were too cute together. They played ring around the rosie in the water, and Kylie wasn’t afraid of the water at all. It was adorable. I thought this picture captured her joy just perfectly.

Day 2 – A Picture A Day While My Soldier’s Away

I struggled today with a painful kink in my neck.  Poor Kylie was bouncing off the walls with boredom, so we decided to take a trip to the park.  The lovely Landis family got Kylie a goodie bag of outdoor toys for her birthday, one of which was a kite.   Since it was such a beautiful, breezy day we brought the kite along.  Our friend Tracie and her kiddos met us at the park too.  All of the kids seemed to have had a great time.  It turns out that keeping a kite in the air is much harder than I expected!  We all took turns attempting to keep it airbound, and laughing when it took a nosedive towards Tracie nearly each time.  This picture is Kylie flying the kite mid- nosedive.  I think the trip to the park definitely made up for our mostly housebound day.  Oh, and great gift Whitney & family!
