I Want Action{s}! Post Processing Love

I’ve received quite a few messages regarding settings and post processing on some of the recent fall images I’ve posted, so I decided to post a couple before and after images taken of my daughter and hopefully answer everyone at the same time 🙂

First and foremost, I cannot take credit for the setting.  The lighting was good (not bad and not great) and the leaves were bright, bold and beautiful.  If you don’t have good lighting, you won’t have a good image.  If you have good lighting with a bad setting, it’s not easy to get a good image.  Good lighting + good setting = good chance of a good image.

With that being said, I tend to underexpose a tad when I shoot to avoid blowing my highlights, which you will notice in my before images.  I shoot in RAW, and these two were both with a 35mm at 2.0, ISO 400, and SS 1/200.  I pull the images up in ACR (or lightroom) and I adjust the exposure there just to keep my colors in check and not overexposed.  Any other technical edits usually happen at that stage as well.

Next, I load the images in Photoshop and begin the artistic side of enhancements.  Here’s my secret – are you ready?  It’s called The Jazzy Peony Prop Shop!  Randi Jasmine’s action sets are AAAA-MAZ-ING!  I edit almost entirely with her actions on all of my images and have yet to be disappointed.  While this may seem like a shameless plug for my dear friend Jasmine, {and it is}, it’s also the TRUTH!  So that’s it folks – that’s what’s in my magic hat.  Head over to her Facebook Fanpage and give her some love – like the page, tell her I sent you!  If you want to take the plunge and give her actions a try, you can find them available for purchase HERE too.  I promise that you will thank me (and definitely her) fairly quickly.

If you happen to take my advice, I would LOVE to see some before and after images from you too!  You can post them to my  Pictured Moments Facebook Fanpage or email them to me at april@picturedmomentsbyapril.com if you don’t mind me sharing them.  Thanks so much and good luck!

Military Families Learn to Relish the Moment | Fort Campbell Newborn Photographer

What a beautiful baby newborn Cole was!  He was just as sweet as can be, calm and content throughout his entire newborn portrait session.  Considering that his Daddy’s deployment to Afghanistan with the Army was just around the corner, I expected the tension to be a little thicker, and Cole to be affected by it.  I found the opposite to be true though.  The family was more focused on relishing the moment, enjoying each other, and attempting to slow down the passing of time.  I enjoyed spending time with them during their session, especially Cole and his older brother Connor.  I can’t wait to watch these boys grow over the next year, while preserving memories as images to share with their Daddy away at war.

Last Day of MOvember, Newborn Baby Style! | Clarksville Newborn Baby Photographer

newborn twin boys wearing mustaches for movember

I have to admit – this was the first year that I heard of MOvember at all.  The month long event takes place each November and involves men (possibly some women?) growing out and sportin’ moustaches to “change the face of men’s health” and raise awareness about men’s health issues.  A handful of clients showed up to their sessions this month with new (and temporary) moustaches for the event.  It was fun to see the participation spread to people of all ages.  When newborn twins Ethan & Eli came to visit me for their newborn portraits, I was tickled pink to learn that Mom brought along a few costume type moustaches for the baby boys to wear.  She explained that her dad was an infamous man known for his ‘stache, so she wanted to photograph his grandsons rockin’ their very own.

Twin newborn babies and thei mustaches

I’m not sure about you, but I can already see the resemblance!  Apparently the newborn twin boys’ picture was a hit because it was featured over at Best Newborn Photographers | Baby Pictures this week too.  How fun!  I can’t wait to share the rest of Ethan and Eli’s twin newborn portraits with all of you.

Did you rock a ‘stache for MOvember too?  Show your support in changing the face of men’s health, and share your moustache picture on the Facebook Fanpage wall today!

Newborn Baby Ryker James! | Fort Campbell Newborn Photographer

Ryker James.  Is that not one of THE BEST newborn boy names ever?  I kinda love it.  Ryker was a newborn photographer’s dream baby – not only was he absolutely gorgeous, but he was also what I like to call a “honeybadger” baby.  {Appropriately nicknamed by his parents}.  Honeybadger babies are the equivalent to winning the newborn photography lottery.  They are just calm, cool, collected and asleep – no matter what position or contraption you pose them in/on.  Honeybadger babies just don’t give a …  DARN.  heh 🙂

Here are some of my favorites from our session, ending with Ryker’s honeybadger DAD caught snoozing.  I guess we know where Ryker gets it from then!
