Your Favorite Newborn Pictures of 2012 from Pictured Moments By April

On the Facebook Fanpage, I recently put out a plea for help in choosing some favorite newborn images from 2012 for my side-show header on my new (upcoming) website.  I have to say that I was blown away by the responses and feedback that so many of you shared – thank you for your opinions and willingness to help!  I didn’t want to let all of your hard work go to waste, so here are the results of your feedback:

In no particular order, these were the 30 FAN FAVORITE newborn images of 2012:

Newborn Twin Brothers Ethan & Eli | Clarksville Newborn Photographer

Newborn Twin Baby Boys These twin brothers stole my heart and the public spotlight more than once over the past few months.  Considering that their mother and father were both soldiers in the Army and served together in Afghanistan, I should have expected these precious little “military brats” to take charge and steal hearts along the way.  Born micro-preemies, the boys were 9 weeks old by time they graced me with their presence.  Even so, they were each approximately 5 lbs at the time.  Tiny!

To honor their dual military parents, we incorporated Mom & Dad’s Uniform Shirts atop the separate tiers of a miniature bunk bed.  The setup proved to be not only meaningful and PERSONAL to the family, but also a big hit with the public.  BEST NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHERS featured the image of the boys on the bunk bed on THE BLOG and their Facebook Fanpage on December 2nd, 2012.

This image was featured at BEST NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHERS as well on December 29th, and proves to be a favorite image for many (including me).  I plead the 5th on which brother this is though – I refuse to play favorites!

Since the boys were photographed in MOvember {November} and have a grandfather with a famous ‘stache, we decided to run with it and photograph them supporting the cause as well.  It became another little personal touch that tells a story about their family, which is an important part of what I strive to give each client.  Here they are pictured with their Grandfather:

Twin newborn babies and their mustaches for MOVEMBER

Apparently the newborn ‘stache picture was appreciated by more than just the family it represented.  Plenty of giggles and comments came about, and BEST BABY PHOTOGRAPHERS shared the picture on their Facebook Fanpage on November 28th.  How fun!

Being the middle of the holidays, we put together a very fitting Facebook Timeline Cover for Mom & Dad too – it still makes me chuckle 🙂

Silent Night? Yeah Right! Newborn Twins

When Daddy & Mommy were deployed together in Afghanistan, Daddy gave Mommy a teddy bear lovingly named “Beans”.  How appropriate that Beans be photographed with the boys now!  I wonder what will become of Beans once the boys are old enough to realize there is only ONE Beans?  I think we may have to check back with the parents in a few years to find out.  Until then, they were perfectly content sharing him in sweet slumber.

Here are a few more favorites from our time together, including this adorable shot with tiny little newborn baby fedora hats from Kasey’s Creations!  (She makes the infamous little newborn Army caps as well).  You can follow her on Facebook too if you like, tell her I sent you!

All in all, it was a wonderful session!  My dear friend Jasmine over at The Jazzy Peony Prop Shop assisted with the babies, stop by her Facebook Fanpage and give her some love if you get a chance!

Last but not least, I must include the obligatory sleeping parent out-take that so many of you love.  With twins, I expected Mom to be knocked out much sooner and for much longer, but I will take what I can get 🙂

I hope you’ve enjoyed these images and “getting to know” this family with me.  Just for fun, if this blog post receives 20 comments this month, then the family will receive a free gift!  So, if you love what you see, please make sure you SHARE IT so others can see what you love too.  Thank you!

Watch Me Grow – Then & Now with ‘Kenzie, Newborn and 4 months!

I don’t know about you, but I’m a before and after junkie!  Being a highly visual person, I’m always drawn to images documenting growth, change, or just the progress of life.  As you can imagine, I tend to be pretty fascinated when my itty-bitty newborn baby clients come back for their 4 month, 8 month, or first birthday portraits.  It never occurred to me that maybe YOU would enjoy the comparisons as well, until McKenzie came along for her 4 month portraits.  I will make it a point to share more of the “then & now” updates so that you all can enjoy watching the babies grow too!

McKenzie was such a sweet, beautiful little newborn girl!  These were my two favorite images from her newborn portrait session:

newborn baby girl with princess tiara and her frogsmiling newborn baby girl with her Daddy's Army uniform and dogtags

And here she was at her 4 month baby session – I just adore how her smile is exactly the same!  She’s even more beautiful now that shes batting her baby blues too.

I hope you enjoy these as much as I do, because I have plenty more to share.  Thanks for following along and sharing too!

I Want Action{s}! Post Processing Love

I’ve received quite a few messages regarding settings and post processing on some of the recent fall images I’ve posted, so I decided to post a couple before and after images taken of my daughter and hopefully answer everyone at the same time 🙂

First and foremost, I cannot take credit for the setting.  The lighting was good (not bad and not great) and the leaves were bright, bold and beautiful.  If you don’t have good lighting, you won’t have a good image.  If you have good lighting with a bad setting, it’s not easy to get a good image.  Good lighting + good setting = good chance of a good image.

before and after post processing from Pictured Moments By April with the jazzy peony action sets

With that being said, I tend to underexpose a tad when I shoot to avoid blowing my highlights, which you will notice in my before images.  I shoot in RAW, and these two were both with a 35mm at 2.0, ISO 400, and SS 1/200.  I pull the images up in ACR (or lightroom) and I adjust the exposure there just to keep my colors in check and not overexposed.  Any other technical edits usually happen at that stage as well.

Before and After, post processing by Pictured Moments by April with The Jazzy Peony Action Sets

Next, I load the images in Photoshop and begin the artistic side of enhancements.  Here’s my secret – are you ready?  It’s called The Jazzy Peony Prop Shop!  Randi Jasmine’s action sets are AAAA-MAZ-ING!  I edit almost entirely with her actions on all of my images and have yet to be disappointed.  While this may seem like a shameless plug for my dear friend Jasmine, {and it is}, it’s also the TRUTH!  So that’s it folks – that’s what’s in my magic hat.  Head over to her Facebook Fanpage and give her some love – like the page, tell her I sent you!  If you want to take the plunge and give her actions a try, you can find them available for purchase HERE too.  I promise that you will thank me (and definitely her) fairly quickly.

If you happen to take my advice, I would LOVE to see some before and after images from you too!  You can post them to my  Pictured Moments Facebook Fanpage or email them to me at april@picturedmomentsbyapril.com if you don’t mind me sharing them.  Thanks so much and good luck!

Famous Babies in Clarksville, TN and Fort Campbell, KY

It sure has been a crazy busy month so far, whew.  That’s not a complaint from me though, because crazy busy equals beautiful babies!  Here are a few that have been featured on different websites in the newborn photography and baby photography industry recently:

Ryker made it to the Best Newborn Photographers Facebook Fanpage on October 4th – click here to view his portrait on their page!

On September 9th,  Raelynn’s newborn portrait was featured on the Baby Pictures Facebook FanpageClick Here to access her image on their wall!

Charlee’s 4 month baby portrait was featured on the Best Baby Photographers Facebook Fanpage on October 2nd – click here to see her image on their wall!

Newborn Jacob pulled a double header!  His image was featured HERE on the Newborn Goodness Blog on September 25th.  His precious little pucker was also chosen as a feature in the Be Inspired:  Black and White theme from Confessions of a Prop Junkie on October 4th!

Most recently, newborn baby Arabella was featured on the Best Newborn Photographers Facebook Fanpage.   You can Click Here to see her image on their wall!  She made an appearance over at Baby Pictures too on October 19th.

Thank you all for continuing to bring your beautiful babies to see me!  Each and every baby I meet has changed my life in some way.  They inspire me daily and because of these precious babies, I am able to chase my dreams.  Thank you!

Day 202 – A Picture A Day While My Soldier’s Away

Sarah flew into Nashville today to spend the holidays with Kylie and me.  Her boyfriend Chase wanted to be there to pick her up as well, so he joined me for the trip.  We stopped for some lunch first and then headed to Opryland to visit the ICE & SNOW displays.  This is our group shot at the beginning of the ICE display.  They make you wear these crazy thick blue parkas – I felt like the Michelin Man!  The display was pretty spectacular – everything was made of ice, even the walls!  Kylie thought it was cool too, but the slides made of ice most definitely topped her list.  She could have played on those all day long if I would have let her.  The SNOW event was fun too, but not as big as I anticipated.  We got to see a few reindeer and Kylie attempted to make an igloo and a snowman.  Her favorite part of this event was probably the snowball range though.  Later in the day, we visited the Jellystone park to watch the Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland light display.  We had a fun day!

Day 120 – A Picture A Day While My Soldier’s Away

Metlife & Cracker Barrel bought out a showing of Disney’s Toy Story 3 on Ice and distributed the tickets to Fort Campbell soldiers & families. What a blessing! We had a great time but Kylie had a BLAST! I love how companies really cater to the military up here in Tennessee/Kentucky. It’s great to see all of the support and appreciation from businesses. Thank You!!!

Day 28 – A Picture A Day While My Soldier’s Away

Crystal & Family are visiting for the weekend! I am so excited to have them here. We started off the day with lunch at Jack’s BBQ in Nashville, then hit up the Adventure Science Center for hours of fun. The kids loved it! We finished off our Nashville trip with dinner at Joe’s Crab Shack downtown. The food was great! We were lovin’ the bibs that the waitress tied on each of us – we insisted on a picture. Throughout the day Crystal kept apologizing for all of the “chaos” that comes along with their BIG family. Ironically, chaotic or not, I’m enjoying every minute. I’ve missed them so much!
